What Coaching Is (and What It Isn't)

Coaching offers education, accountability, and structured practice — it is not therapy, medical care, or crisis support.

Coaching, plainly defined

Coaching is a structured, forward-looking process focused on education, goal setting, communication practice, and accountability. It works from where you are now toward a change you've decided you want, with a coach helping you build and follow through on a plan.

What coaching is not

Coaching is not psychotherapy, mental-health diagnosis or treatment, medical care, legal advice, or crisis intervention. It doesn't replace those services, and a good coach will say clearly when something falls outside coaching's scope rather than trying to stretch coaching to cover it.

  • Coaching does not diagnose or treat mental-health or medical conditions.
  • Coaching is not a substitute for licensed therapy, counseling, or medical treatment.
  • Coaching is not appropriate for emergencies or crisis situations — please contact local emergency services or a crisis line if that applies to you.
  • Coaching does not offer legal advice or guaranteed outcomes.

What a typical coaching relationship involves

Coaching usually starts with a consultation to talk through what's going on and whether coaching is the right fit. From there, sessions focus on clarity, planning, and practice, often supported by exercises or worksheets between sessions — because most of the actual change happens in daily life, not only during the conversation itself.

How to know if coaching is right for you

Coaching tends to work well for people who have a specific area they want to change, are willing to take action between sessions, and are looking for structure and accountability rather than a diagnosis or medical treatment. If what you're facing feels more like a mental-health crisis or a medical concern, coaching is the wrong starting point, and an honest coach should tell you that directly.

Starting the conversation

The clearest way to find out whether coaching fits your situation is a consultation — a no-obligation conversation to talk through what's going on and decide together whether coaching makes sense.
